AUBURN – Scrabble Day, celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Scrabble brand crossword game, will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 19, at the Auburn Public Library
Sixty years ago, an out-of-work architect fiddled around with creating a board game and came up with Scrabble, a game that has sold more than 100 million copies in 121 countries around the world. The library, in partnership with Literacy Volunteers-Androscoggin, will celebrate the day.
Scrabble games will be available to play all day, along with special presentations. Tournament player Sharon Hawkes will describe National Scrabble Association play at 10 a.m. and invite players to sign up for the first Maine tournament in decades, to be held in Portland in August.
At 11 a.m., Literacy Volunteers-Androscoggin will explain how they use Scrabble tiles to help teach reading and will do a demonstration on learning disabilities at 11:30.
The birthday celebration will be complete with cake and lemonade at noon. Word games and a Scrabble fact hunt will be available in the computer lab and the reference area. Scrabble and word game winners can enter into a drawing for prizes.
