Winthrop scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning, sparked by Josh Nichols’ two-run singlefor the game-winning hit, as the Red Sox held on to beat the Indians 7-5 under the lights Monday in Men’s Senior Baseball League action.
The Indians didn’t go away easily, answering back with two runs in the bottom of the seventh with RBI hits from Mike Chamard and Derrick Crommett. In the bottom of the ninth, the Indians scored two more times, then loaded the bases before relief pitcher Matt Richardson struck out Jim Flagg to end the game.
Torey Carr got the win for Winthrop, hurling seven innings and allowing three runs on six hits and fanning eight. Chris Bessey suffered the loss for the Indians.
Big sticks in the game for Winthrop were Brett Witherell with three hits and Carr and Mike House with two hits each. Chamard paced the Tribe with three hits, while Bessey and Rocky DeSanctis were repeaters. The Indians host the Downeast Dodgers on Sunday at Maranacook HS, while the Red Sox travel to West Paris to take on the first place Westies in a key match up.
