GRAY – Lucas Chase’s two-run home run in the fifth inning helped Cole Farms salvage a doubleheader split with Bessey Motors in American Legion Zone III baseball Saturday.

Bessey Motors (10-3) routed Cole Farms 16-3 in the opener, before Chase’s blast paved the way for a 6-3 victory in the nightcap.

Dillon Trundy fired a five-inning five hitter in Game 1, with six strikeouts and two walks. Trundy also helped his own cause with a doubke and three RBIs. Brandon Chase chipped in with a triple, while Ryan Yates and Evan Humphrey had two hits apeice. Yates, Trundy and Travis Fillebron hit doubles.

Bessey stranded nine runners in Game 2 against pitchers Chase and Nick Derice. Chase’s homer highlighted a three-run outburst that snapped a 2-2 tie. Matt Verrier hit a solo homer for Bessey. John Sundquist and Artie Winship doubled for Cole Farms (8-7).

Gayton wins 2 by forfeit

LEWISTON – Gayton Post (12-2) of Lewiston remained in first place in Zone III when it won a doubleheader by forfeit over Swansey-Torrey Post of Dixfield on Saturday.

Monmouth sweeps Messalonskee

WALES – Travis Harwood fanned six and hurled a complete game, five-hit shutout in the first game of a Monmouth doubleheader sweep over Messalonskee.

Tyler Cobb tallied a pair of hits, including his fifth home run of the year, and knocked in a pair to pace Monmouth at the plate.

Mike Brennan added a double and scored a run.

Justin Denbow and Josh Prue each registered RBI sac flies for Monmouth (12-2).

Matt Stuart took the loss for Messalonskee (4-9).

Brennan plated the game-winner in game two with a two-out single to left in the fourth inning as Monmouth escaped with a 5-4 victory.

Nick Curato had a pair of hits for Messalonskee and Ray Bernier added a triple.

Ethan Guerette and Justin Denbow each doubled and singled for Monmouth.

Corey Palmer set the table for Brennan with a base hit. He advanaced to second on a balk and stole third.

Forrest Dwyer went the distance for Monmouth and improved to 3-0. Phil Cormier suffered the loss.
