CHICAGO – Rich Harden struck out 10 in an impressive debut for the Chicago Cubs, who blew a five-run lead in the ninth inning before beating the San Francisco Giants 8-7 Saturday on Reed Johnson’s single in the 11th.

Jim Edmonds homered and drove in four runs early for the Cubs, who led 7-0 after four innings and held on to win for the fifth time in six games. The Giants have lost six straight.

Cubs pitcher Sean Marshall singled off Brian Wilson (0-2) to start the bottom of the 11th. Mark DeRosa then walked, and Marshall was forced out on Mike Fontenot’s bunt attempt. Johnson then laced a hit to right and DeRosa slid into home just ahead of Emmanuel Burriss’ throw.

Marshall (2-2) pitched two innings for the win.

Carlos Marmol was staked to a 7-2 lead in the ninth and imploded, giving up five runs – four earned – and five hits in one inning.

Harden, acquired from the Oakland A’s in a six-player deal Tuesday, didn’t allow a run and gave up five hits and walked three in 5 1-3 innings.

Mets 3, Rockies 0

NEW YORK – Jose Reyes homered and the resilient New York bullpen shut down the Colorado Rockies after Pedro Martinez left with a sore shoulder, combining on a one-hitter.

Fernando Tatis and Brian Schneider also drove in runs for the Mets (50-44), who have won eight straight for the first time since June 7-15, 2006. They’re a season-best six games over .500.

Martinez left after four innings, allowing just a hit and a walk. The three-time Cy Young Award winner was replaced by Carlos Muniz (1-1) to start the fifth.

The Mets bullpen has pitched 18 1-3 innings of shutout ball this homestand. The Mets pitching staff hasn’t allowed more than three hits in a franchise-best five straight games.

The Rockies have dropped five of seven since a season-best five-game winning streak. They have scored two runs in three games, and squandered a second consecutive serviceable start by Ubaldo Jimenez (4-9), who constantly challenged the Mets with a 98-mph fastball.

Diamondbacks 10, Phillies 4

PHILADELPHIA – Randy Johnson helped secure his 290th victory with a two-run double to start an eight-run fourth inning, and Arizona beat Philadelphia.

Johnson (6-7) struck out three in six innings, but left while warming up in the seventh because of cramping in his calf that began after running the bases in the fourth.

The 44-year-old Johnson allowed four runs, five hits and walked one.

A career .125 hitter, Johnson laced a double to the left-field wall in the fourth inning to give Arizona a 4-2 lead. The Diamondbacks went on to match a club record for runs in an inning.

Phillies starter Adam Eaton (3-8) allowed eight runs on seven hits, failing to reach the fourth inning for the second straight start. Eaton has allowed 16 runs on 17 hits in 6 1-3 innings in his last two outings.
