WATERFORD – Contests and events will mark the Waterford World’s Fair this weekend.

The fair, which dates back to 1850, will open at 7 a.m. from Friday through Sunday. The fairgrounds are on Green Road off Route 35 in North Waterford. Admission to the fair is $5 for adults, $3 for senior citizens, and free for children under the age of 5.

Each day of the fair will feature events such as woodsman demonstrations, steer and oxen shows, and draft horse pulls. Each day also features novelty games and contests for children and adults.

On Friday, a miniature horse show begins at 9 a.m. At 7 p.m., a karaoke contest will take place at the dance hall and women’s skillet throwing contest at the show ring. A couch potato contest at the pulling ring will pit male participants against each other in such grueling activities as fridge opening and remote control use.

At 8 p.m., the He-Man competition at the pulling ring will test participants against a strength and skills obstacle course. At 9 p.m., a dance will take place at the dance hall, with a suggested $1 donation.

On Saturday, a variety show will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the dance hall, with a $2 admission price.

The fair wraps up Sunday with several contests, including a potato salad stir-off at 1 p.m. and a “back-seat driver” contest at 2 p.m., in which a child must give directions to another child in a peddle tractor. The fair closes at 6 p.m.
