OXFORD – The Thompson Lake Environmental Association has announced events for the summer. The association serves the towns of Poland, Oxford, Otisfield and Casco.
The fourth annual “I Did a Paddle” will be held on Saturday, July 19, (rain/wind date, Saturday, July 26) starting at 9 a.m. from the south end of Thompson Lake at the Thompson Lake Marina owned by John Littlefield.
The event will follow the lake to the north end and finish at Pismo Beach. All participants must register and wear an assigned number prior to the event or get a number from a support boat after launching from the shore.
The event will end with “Pizza with Pizzazz” at the Pismo Beach picnic area from 11:15 to 1 p.m. There will be pizza, salad, drinks, chips and watermelon. The cost is $5 a person.
Association support boats will follow along to insure a safe journey and to provide water and encouragement to the paddlers and rowers. The event is open to the public; participation is at the individual’s own risk.

The association has a new harvesting boat named the “Hippobottomus,” which is manned by three divers under the supervision of Rob McVety of Otisfield.
Scott Williams, lake biologist, will also speak on the zooplankton study on Thompson Lake and water clarity, under the auspices of the University of Maine, Orono.
Association items will be for sale as well as a “Photo Auction” by Kathy Cain, co-president elect. New directors will be nominated representing all sections of Thompson Lake and a new slate of officers will take the helm for the coming two years. The third annual barbecue and pig roast will be held from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at Agassiz Village Camp. There will also be salads, baked beans, corn, rolls and desserts. The cost is $15 for adults; free, children under 12. Association items will be on sale and Cain will sponsor another “Photo Auction.”
