WOODSTOCK – Selectmen on Tuesday continued work on a town common beautification plan.
It was decided to include blue stone seats atop a stone wall that will be constructed at the rear of the common in Bryant Pond. People will be able to to dedicate the seats to family members who have died or to others for $250. Sign-up for seats is any time that the town office is open.
Other park features include a 14-foot statue of an old-fashioned crank telephone to commemorate the old Bryant Pond Phone Co. that served the area for years during the 1900s. A small gazebo also is planned, along with flowers and shrubs.
Local design
Town Manager Vern Maxfield said the statue was designed by resident Gil Whitman and carved by T.W. Dick of Gardiner. Gardening will be done on a volunteer basis by the Master Gardeners Club of the Oxford County Extension Service as a community service.
“We will be meeting soon and completing a layout for the project and will have a public meeting in a few weeks to allow the people to share their input with us and give us an idea of how they feel about the plan,” said Maxfield.
He said no tax money will be used in the project, but town equipment will be used.
In other business, Maxfield said that an asphalt path has been completed at the Little League ball field on Route 26, leading to the snack shack and making the area handicap accessible. Barriers were placed near the grandstands at the senior league ball field to keep vehicles off the field.
“People driving on the field has been a problem for quite some time and vehicles driving on the field does heavy damage and leads to the need for people spending valuable time repairing the damage. Hopefully, now the problem will be eliminated,” said Maxfield.
