WATERVILLE (AP) – A Waterville woman is organizing a group to search Saint Albans Mountain for the remains of Shirley Moon Atwood, who has been missing since 2006.

This month, a judge convicted Atwood’s ex-husband, Shannon Atwood, of killing another woman, Cheryl Murdoch. Police suspect he killed Shirley Moon Atwood as well, but her body was never found.

That’s where Cherrie Hight enters the picture. Hight was friends with Cheryl Murdoch and she says she formed a bond with Moon Atwood’s family during the murder trial.

Hight says Moon Atwood was on Saint Albans Mountain on the day she went missing, so that’s where the search will focus on July 26, 27, and 28. State Police Lt. Gary Wright says anyone is legally entitled to search, but he’d prefer that the searching be left to professionals.
