WATERFORD – Two people were injured Tuesday afternoon when their motorcycle collided with the back of a car in South Waterford village, state police Trooper Andre Paradis said.
Kirby Knox, 54, of Lovell and his passenger, Christine Doyle, 42, of Waterford, were thrown from Knox’s Harley-Davidson into the parking lot of Kimball’s Hardware & Building Supplies on Routes 35/37, the trooper said.
The driver of the car involved, Lura Widman, 65, of Brookline, Mass., was not hurt.
Knox and Doyle were taken to Bridgton Hospital with broken bones, Paradis said. She was not listed as a patient there Tuesday night, a spokesman said.
Knox was flown to Central Maine Medical Center where his condition was listed as stable Tuesday night, a spokesman said.
“He seemed to be worse. He was moaning,” said Edith Kimball, owner of Kimball Hardware and Building Supplies on Route 35, where the accident occurred. “She was sitting up and lit up a cigarette.”
They were not wearing helmets, she said.
Kimball said she called 911 for help and ran outside with umbrellas, which others held over the victims to shade them until help could arrive.
“No one (in the car) was hurt. It just barely dented the car,” she said.
The state trooper said Widman was slowing down to make a left turn into the Bear Mountain public spring across from the hardware store when Knox’s bike struck the back of her car and went out of control.
The motorcycle sustained about $2,000 damage; Widman’s 2004 Toyota Corolla $3,000, he estimated.
No summons was issued.
Stoneham Rescue, United Ambulance and an Oxford County Sheriff’s Office deputy assisted.
