NORWAY – The organizers of the 2008 Norway Triathlon were exhausted and pleased at the close of the event on Saturday, July 19.
The Tri was limited to 100 solo or team entries, a limit reached on Thursday of this week. There were 86 registered individual competitors who completed the race, comprised of a 1-kilometer swim, 15-kilometer bike ride and 5-kilometer running race. Fourteen 3-person teams competed as well.
This length of triathlon allows for a broad range of competitors, as opposed to the 112-mi bike, 26.2-mile run and 2.2-mile swim “Ironman” versions. Competitors came from 14 states from Alaska to Florida, although the bulk were from Maine and New England.
The course was shared evenly by men and women. The competitor’s ages ranged was from 12 to 67, with the average age just under 40.
Tom Lowery, 45, of Gainesville, Fla., won the event in 1 hour, 5 minutes.
He was followed by Ben Hemani of Hanover, N.H. (1:08), Eric Darling of Shelburne, Vt. (1:08), Sarah Alexander of Hanover, N.H. (1:12), Sarah Pribram of Shelburne, Vt. (1:14) and Katrine Alcaide of Portland (1:20).
Norway’s own female relay team, “Stayin’ Alive: 198 Years of Combined Athletic Prowess,” clocked in at 1:40. Team members were Hazel, Glazier, Kathy Greenleaf and Irene Morris.
