NEW YORK – Torii Hunter, Vladimir Guerrero and Juan Rivera each hit a three-run homer, and the Los Angeles Angels added to their East Coast romp with a 12-6 win over the New York Yankees on Thursday night.
Coming off a three-game sweep at Boston in which they scored 22 runs, the Angels hit a trio of three-run homers in a game for the first time in 30 years. Los Angeles improved baseball’s best record to 68-40 with its 11th victory in 13 games since the All-Star break.
Tigers 14, Indians 12
CLEVELAND – Kelly Shoppach tied a major league record with five extra-base hits, including a game-tying homer in the ninth, but his Cleveland Indians lost 14-12 to the Detroit Tigers in 13 innings Wednesday night.
Shoppach had two homers, three doubles and drove in three runs as the eighth player to get five extra-base hits in a game. Shawn Green of the Los Angeles Dodgers last accomplished the feat with four homers and a double on May 23, 2002.
Shoppach had a chance for a great ending to his big game, but he was struck out by Casey Fossum (2-0) with the bases loaded and no outs in the 12th.
Carlos Guillen singled with one out off Juan Rincon (2-3), the Indians’ seventh pitcher, in the 13th. Guillen took third on Curtis Granderson’s fifth hit, a single to right. Placido Polanco grounded to third, scoring Guillen, and Granderson later scored on a throwing error by first baseman Ryan Garko.
Detroit had 22 hits and the Indians had 19. Both teams stranded 14 runners.
Cubs 11, Brewers 4
MILWAUKEE – Jim Edmonds hit two homers including a grand slam, and the Chicago Cubs finished off a four-game sweep of Milwaukee with an 11-4 rout on Thursday to extend their lead in the NL Central.
Just five days ago, the Cubs and Brewers were tied atop the division. After the sweep, the Brewers have lost five straight and are five games out. Chicago has won five straight.
The Cardinals began the day four games behind Chicago.
Rich Harden picked up his first NL win, giving up a run and six hits in seven innings with nine strikeouts.
Alfonso Soriano and Kosuke Fukudome also homered for the Cubs, who swept four games from the Brewers for the first time since 2003.
Phillies 8, Nationals 4
WASHINGTON – Jimmy Rollins and Jayson Werth homered, and the Philadelphia Phillies stretched their winning streak to five with an 8-4 victory over the Washington Nationals on Thursday night.
The first-place Phillies completed a three-game sweep of the injury-riddled Nationals and took a one-game lead over the idle New York Mets in the NL East.
Washington has lost nine straight, tying this season’s longest dry spell and the worst skid since the Nationals moved from Montreal in 2005.
Braves 9, Cardinals 4
ATLANTA – Rookie Clint Sammons homered and drove in three runs to lead Atlanta past the St. Louis Cardinals 9-4 on Thursday night, snapping the Braves’ five-game losing streak.
Sammons, who was called up from the minors on Monday, picked up the first RBI of his fledgling big league career in the fourth, singling in a run that tied the game at 3. Two innings later, he put the Braves ahead to stay with his first homer, a two-run shot over the wall in left that put the Braves ahead for good. Sammons added another hit in the eighth and scored the Braves’ final run.
Omar Infante of the Braves chipped in with three hits and two RBIs, including a homer leading off the second.
St. Louis failed to complete a four-game sweep of the Braves and fell five games behind the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central.
