ATTLEBORO, Mass. (AP) – A Bristol County assistant district attorney has pleaded not guilty to charges that he sexually assaulted a 17-year-old girl.

Bridget Norton Middleton, spokeswoman for the Plymouth District Attorney’s office, which is handling the case, says Pete Joseph Costanza was arraigned Monday on charges of indecent assault and battery, assault and battery and attempted extortion. He was released on $10,000 bail.

The teen-ager alleged that Costanza attacked her Friday in Attleboro District Court’s conference room. She was at the court to check on her boyfriend, who was due to be released from jail.

Spokesman Gregg Milliote said Bristol County District Attorney Sam Sutter suspended the 39-year-old Costanza without pay on Saturday.

A telephone listing for Costanza could not be found. His attorney, Daniel O’Malley, declined to comment.
