Rangeley – Challenger Gary Shaffer is the town’s newest selectman.

Shaffer received 180 votes, topping incumbent Selectman Rob Welch’s 123 votes, Town Clerk Laura Haley said Monday night.

The special runoff election was held after a tie vote in a recount in June.

In the first vote on June 10, Welch received 136 votes and Shaffer 135. A recount later that month resulted with both men getting 136.

“We had a really good turnout,” Haley said, with 305 people voting. There were 303 valid ballots with two ballots spoiled due to markings or names written on them.

Shaffer won a three-year term on the Board of Selectmen.
