RANGELEY – A Rangeley woman escaped injury Tuesday afternoon when her car slammed into an empty snowmobile trailer parked beside Route 4 near the Rangeley Inn, police Chief Phil Weymouth said.

Barbara Quimby, 70, was distracted, he said, and swerved her 2006 Chevrolet sedan into the trailer.

John Deangelis, 41, of Wells had parked his 2007 GMC pickup with trailer attached, taken the four-wheelers off it and left for an afternoon of riding with family and friends. When he returned, just the truck and tongue of the trailer were there, the chief said.

He learned later what happened.

Quimby’s car hit the back of the trailer, which twisted and snapped the tongue off and pushed the trailer over the sidewalk onto the grass, Weymouth said. The trailer, which belonged to another man, had a bent sway bar and bent tire rims among other damage.

Quimby’s car had the right front corner to the passenger door cut out, just like a knife had been taken to it. The impact took out the battery and the front wheel well, and shut the car right down, Weymouth said.

He estimated at least $4,000 damage was done to it.
