LEWISTON – hoMEworks, a non-profit organization that promotes home-buyer education throughout Maine, will host a Home Buyer Fair Aug. 9 at the Lewiston Armory, 65 Central Ave., from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Admission is free. It is intended for anyone interested in becoming a home owner, or making their home better or more energy efficient.

The fair will offer exhibitors including mortgage lenders, real estate companies, non-profit housing organizations, and local, state, and federal agencies that can provide expert advice and information about special programs.

The fair also features a series of “how-to” home improvement and energy-saving demonstrations, and short educational sessions such as “The First Steps to Home Buying,” “Beyond Energy Saving Tips,” and “Testing Your Home for Radon.” Beginning at noon, Home Depot staff will conduct a series of 30-minute, do-it-yourself home improvements demonstrations.

Attendees will have the opportunity to apply for a free credit report. Credit counselors will be on hand to assist in the application process and schedule on-site consultations on resolving credit problems. Along with a free credit report, participants will receive a copy of “Building A Better Credit Record,” a guide that explains how to improve a credit report, deal with debt, and avoid credit-related scams.
