KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis was hit in the wrist by a pitch in the first inning against Kansas City on Wednesday night and left the game after getting doubled off first base.
He was replaced in the bottom of the first by Sean Casey.
The pitch by Luke Hochevar appeared to hit Youkilis in the right wrist and possibly bounce into his chest or shoulder. He stood around a few minutes in discomfort but went to first base to run. The next batter, Mike Lowell, hit a liner back to Hochevar and Youkilis was doubled off.
The Red Sox started the night three games behind Tampa Bay in the AL East.
Ramirez hits 513th career home run
ST. LOUIS (AP) – Manny Ramirez of the Los Angeles Dodgers hit his 513th home run in the second inning Wednesday night, breaking a tie for 20th place with Ernie Banks and Eddie Mathews on the career list.
Ramirez was booed before leading off the second, the crowd evidently slow to forget that he was the World Series MVP in 2004 when the Boston Red Sox swept the Cardinals. Ramirez proceeded to belt a hanging curveball from Joel Pineiro over the center-field wall.
The hit made Ramirez 11-for-17 with three homers, two doubles and six RBIs since joining the Dodgers just before last week’s non-waiver trade deadline.
