Soulful singer/songwriter Richie Havens has for more than three decades used his music to convey messages of brotherhood and personal freedom. He has released more than two dozen albums, including his latest CD, “Nobody Left to Crown,” a collection of new material released in July on Verve Records. His Woodstock appearance proved to be a major turning point in his career. As the festival’s first performer, he held the crowd spellbound for nearly three hours, called back for encore after encore. Having run out of tunes, he improvised a song based on the old spiritual “Motherless Child” that became “Freedom,” a song now considered to be the anthem of a generation, according to his Web site, www.richiehavens.com. Havens will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, in Discovery Park in Freeport, as part of the L.L. Bean 2008 Summer Concert Series. The outdoor concert is free. Bring a lawn chair.
