LACONIA, N.H. (AP) – Thursday night’s storm and flooding in New Hampshire caused millions of dollars of damage which could take weeks to clean up.

In Laconia, flooding washed away part of the boardwalk and tourist train tracks at Weirs Beach, undermined several roads and threatened a regional sewer line.

The sewer pipe, which runs through the damaged area, carries waste from Center Harbor, Meredith, Gilford and Laconia to a pumping station in Laconia, then to a treatment plant in Franklin. Crews worked quickly to stabilize the pipe.

Elsewhere in the region, state Transportation Department Commissioner George Campbell toured damaged areas on Friday. He said he will be seeking federal funding to help pay for repairs.

A family swept downstream in flooding at a campground in Ashland is from North Smithfield, R.I., officials said.

The body of a 7-year-old girl was found in the family’s crumpled SUV.

The mother was found in the middle of the flood waters, clinging to a tree and holding onto her 5-year-old son.

The father had gotten out of the vehicle just before it was swept away, witnesses said.

With the ground saturated and rivers and streams already running high, “no part of the state can handle more rain,” said Emergency Management spokesman Jim Van Dongen.
