BUCKFIELD – The State Fire Marshal will be in Buckfield on Monday to investigate the cause of a Sunday night blaze that destroyed a mobile home on Darnit Road.
Tim Litchfield, assistant fire chief for the Buckfield Volunteer Fire Department, said the fire was reported at about 8:30 p.m. Sunday by a neighbor who smelled smoke and noticed flames coming from the unoccupied mobile home on Darnit Road.
He said one side of the structure was fully engulfed by the time crews arrived, but the fire was brought under control within minutes, containing most of the damage to that side of the trailer.
Litchfield said neighbors told fire investigators that no one was living in the mobile home. He was unsure of who owned the property and added that the fire marshal was being called in because the blaze is considered suspicious.
More than 40 volunteer firefighters from Buckfield, Hebron, Paris, Turner and Sumner responded to the fire, as well as a rescue crew from Buckfield. Litchfield said that firefighters hauled water about one mile from a farm pond on Allen School Road.
“There was very good turnout, very good response from mutual aid towns,” Litchfield said.
