WEST GARDINER – A high-speed police chase on the Maine Turnpike on Wednesday night ended when a man driving a motorcycle exited the highway and crashed on Route 126.
Joseph Russell, 53, of the Pittston area, was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston after crashing about 9:30 p.m.
The chase began about 9 p.m. in Litchfield when a Maine State Police trooper attempted to stop the motorcycle rider for speeding on the turnpike.
Police said Russell sped off on his motorcycle, at times reaching speeds of approximately 100 mph, as he led troopers on a chase that continued for between 10 and 15 miles.
A trooper was attempting to follow the speeding bike when Russell got off at Exit 102 in West Gardiner, police said. From there, the biker continued westbound on Route 126 for another four or five miles.
Police said Russell crashed while trying to make a turn along Route 126. They added emergency crews were there moments later and they called for a medical helicopter.
Russell was being evaluated at CMMC later Wednesday night. Police said his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
Several charges, including eluding police, are expected to be filed.
