PARIS – A grand jury has indicted a former Waterford town official on a charge of embezzling municipal funds.
Jennifer Morin, 35, of Norway Road in Waterford, was charged with one count of Class B theft. The indictment accuses Morin of taking more than $10,000 from the town between 2002 and 2008.
Selectmen’s Chairman John Bell said in a phone interview Thursday night that the total amount of missing money is about $150,000. He said the town auditor and chief investigator are not releasing the exact figure until Morin goes to trial.
Bell said at the annual town meeting in March that the town had a $100,000 bond on each employee, which may be used to recoup some of the missing funds.
The theft was discovered after an annual audit showed irregularities in the town funds.
Morin served as the deputy town clerk for the town for 10 years before resigning Feb. 3. The Oxford County Sheriff’s Office began an investigation into the embezzlement the next day.
According to a letter posted on the Waterford town Web site, Lt. Christopher Wainwright of the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office investigated the matter for five months before presenting his report to the District Attorney’s Office for review and presentation to the grand jury.
Wainwright states in the letter that he had accounted for all of the town’s funds during the investigation and will request financial restitution for the town as part of the case.
Wainwright and Bell were unavailable for comment Thursday afternoon.
Morin received the Community Service Award from the Waterford Grange in 2006, according to Sun Journal archives. She has also served as the treasurer for the Oxford County United Parish, which includes North Waterford and East Stoneham churches.
Conviction of a Class B felony is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
