TURNER – The Turner Natural History Club will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, when the topic will be birds. Members meet at the club across from the Leavitt Institute campus in Turner Center.

The group met July 31 during a spectacular natural event. A thunderstorm occupied most of the meeting, which was conducted by Vice President Gordon Twitchell in the absence of President Bill Steele.

Old business included a vote on repainting the sign and turning it 90 degrees for better road visibility. Also reported was the purchase of new rear stairs to satisfy the insurance company. The handicapped ramp issue was tabled until the next meeting.

Program Director Bill Whitman reported on the success of the July 4 open house, with more than 60 people touring the club and buying plants, and the garden tour. Garden participants were awarded a year’s membership as a thank you. Plans are already being made for next year’s tour.

New business included the annual flower show coming up on Sunday, Aug. 24. The show is judged and is open to the public, adults and children. All first-place winners will receive a year’s membership in the club as well as a ribbon.

Instituted this year will be an amateur photo contest. For rules and categories, e-mail Whitman at [email protected] or call him at 225-3915.

Members discussed holding programs at monthly meetings again, as had been the practice in the past. Topics will be: August, birds; September, travelogue; and October, gardens of England. There will also be a potluck supper at the church next door and the annual election of officers will be held.

All are welcome to attend meetings.
