When the property of the old South Baptist Church on Penley Corner Road in Auburn came up for sale four years ago, builder Rudy Wing sold his home, moved into a motor home and purchased the property. Wing is in pursuit of a dream to start a golf school for youngsters who might not be able to afford to take up the game. The property is also across the road from Fox Ridge Golf club. After purchasing the property, Wing started to take a closer look around the church, climbing to the bell tower by way of a series of ladders. The markings on the old bell caught his interest. The bell was cast by Henry N. Hooper & Company of Boston in 1845. The company also produced artillery for the Civil War. Wing looked up the bell’s pedigree and much to his surprise discovered the Hooper bell firm originated from Paul Revere’s earlier brass and bronze foundry work of Boston. “It was an exciting time for me to have discovered what I believe is a piece of history in a most unlikely and almost forgotten place,” Wing said.
