Auto, cycle show at Farmington Fairgrounds this weekend
FARMINGTON – Stanley Steamers won’t be the only vintage vehicles in town this week when the End of Summer Hoorah automobile and motorcycle show takes place Saturday at the Farmington Fairgrounds.
The show, sponsored by the Farmington Chamber of Commerce, will offer some new features this year, including a motorcycle raffle run to be held on Sunday, said Lorna Nichols, director of the chamber.
Also new this year, the top three winners in auto classes dating from the early 1900s to the present will earn trophies and ribbons, Nichols said. The classic or vintage classes include everything from muscle cars to street rods, Mustangs, custom trucks, teen machines, motorcycles and more.
Another change for those showing their vehicles this year is a registration fee, she said. Owners can pre-register for $8; Saturday the charge will be $10. Owners have not been charged before, but quality trophies and ribbons have been ordered this year and other activities have been planned to complement the show, Nichols said.
Boys and girls, ages 9 to 12 and 5 to 8 may participate in pig scrambles. But the pigs are not the prizes; they’re rented, she said. The winner in each of the four scrambles will be awarded a new bicycle and helmet. There is no charge but pre-registration by 12:30 p.m is necessary because a maximum number of names will be drawn to participate at 1 p.m.
An overnight stay at Sunday River Ski Resort is the prize for the winner of the wife-carrying competition. Brothers and sisters, couples, fathers and daughters, as long as they are over 18, may participate. The winners receive a trip to the National Wife Carrying Competition held Columbus Day weekend at Sunday River in Newry, she said. If they choose to participate in the national competition as part of their prize, organizers will pay their entry fee, she said.
Farmington Rotary Club has a summer auction and barbecue planned with fiddle music provided by the Smith Brothers. The barbecue will feature a roasted pig by Shady Lane Farms along with other barbecue items. Proceeds from the meal will benefit community projects, Nichols said.
Items up for auction include skis and snowboards, electronics, gift certificates, refrigerators and other items donated by area businesses, said Ivan Gould of the Rotary Club.
Motorcyclists are invited to join a group ride Sunday. It will leave the fairgrounds for Kingfield, Eustis and across to Rangeley for lunch, then to the Height of the Land before returning to the chamber office on the Wilton Road for the final raffle drawing. Raffles will be drawn at stops along the way with cash given out as prizes for those who buy tickets.
Pledges will be taken on motorcycle riders with proceeds donated to the Fallen Soldier Memorial fund in Augusta, Nichols said.
Before the ride, the Sap House at the fairgrounds will open from 7 to 9 a.m. to serve a hearty breakfast with Maine maple syrup for a fee.
Vehicle participants may register for the show by calling the chamber at 778-4215 before Saturday or at the gate on Saturday. Judging will take place at noon and the winners will be announced in the early afternoon, she said.
Gates open to the public at 9 a.m. with a $3 admission fee while children under 12 will be admitted free if they are with an adult.
