EAST DIXFIELD – “The country music was super and I really liked the bagpipers,” said Sally Latham of Fayette. Latham was one of hundreds of visitors at the recent annual Banjos to Bagpipes” youth music scholarship weekend at the Countryfolk Music Theatre.
The weekend of music and dancing for all ages was well attended this year, with more that 50 Maine musicians performing over the three-day gathering.
“The Countryfolk Theatre is in its ninth year of offering a place to showcase Maine’s talent of new and seasoned country music performers,” said Larry Bisbee, operator of the Route 2 venue.
Countryfolk took advantage of the weekend to release their made-in-Maine movie, “Barefoot Country Girl.” Bisbee said, “We were very pleased with the donations that came in for the 127 movies that went home with audience members. Those donations go directly to support the annual youth music scholarship awards.” The weekend raised $2,000 for scholarships.
Bisbee said, “Many thanks are in order for all the volunteers who make our music happen on Sundays and this special weekend when we award youth music scholarships.”
This year six young musicians and actors received awards. They were Molly Pietroski of South Paris, Carl Zurhorst of Rumford, Abbie Goldberg of Bethel, Travis Pinkham of Farmington, Melissa Lynn Remilard of Biddeford and Adam Mitchell of Livermore Falls.
The country music Sundays will continue through Labor Day weekend. “Barefoot Country Girl” movies are available for a scholarship donation of $15.95 by calling 645-7531 or e-mailing [email protected].
