WEST PARIS – A husband and wife were hospitalized after a Monday evening crash on Route 26 in West Paris.

Trooper Gregory Tirado of the Maine State Police said officials are not releasing the names of the West Paris couple pending notification of family members. The crash occurred at 7:43 p.m. Monday.

According to Tirado, the couple was southbound on Route 26 near the Paris town line, traveling in an 4-door Oldsmobile sedan. He said the car drifted across the center line and into the northbound lane, went off the side of the road, hit a ditch, went airborne and landed in a second ditch.

The couple were both wearing their seat belts and had to be removed from the vehicle by emergency crews using the Jaws of Life. They were taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston via helicopter.

Tirado said that the crash remains under investigation and a reconstructionist was called to the scene Monday night.
