TORONTO – Jose Bautista and Alex Rios both had four hits Tuesday night and the Toronto Blue Jays beat Minnesota 7-5, their seventh straight victory over the Twins.

Bautista, Rios and Lyle Overbay homered for Toronto, which finished with 17 hits in winning its third straight game.

Minnesota came in tied with the Chicago White Sox atop the AL Central but lost for the seventh time in 10 games and dropped to 5-7 with two games remaining in a season-long 14-game road trip.

Jesse Carlson (5-1) worked two perfect innings for the win, while Boof Bonser (3-7) took the loss.

Angels 5, Tigers 4

DETROIT – Mark Teixeira’s ninth-inning sacrifice fly gave the Los Angeles Angels a 5-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night.

Torii Hunter drove in three run for Los Angeles, which reduced its magic number to clinch the AL West to eight.

Miguel Cabrera hit his third home run in three days and drove in three runs for Detroit, which has lost seven of nine.

Fernando Rodney (0-4) walked Chone Figgins to lead off the ninth. Figgins then stole his third base of the game and went to third on a groundout. Teixeira’s fly ball to center made it 5-4.

Rangers 6, Mariners 4

ARLINGTON, Texas – Brandon McCarthy pitched six strong innings for his first win in more than 13 months, Josh Hamilton drove in three runs and the Texas Rangers beat the Seattle Mariners 6-4 on Tuesday night. McCarthy (1-0) allowed two runs and four hits in his third start of the season. He struck out four without a walk in a 104-pitch outing.

McCarthy, whose last victory was on July 31, 2007, at Cleveland, went on the 60-day disabled list on March 30 with right forearm inflammation after pitching an inning in a spring training game. He didn’t begin throwing in the bullpen until June 21.

Indians 9, White Sox 3

CLEVELAND – Victor Martinez hit his first home run in nearly a year to help the Cleveland Indians beat the Chicago White Sox 9-3 on Tuesday night.

The White Sox remained tied with Minnesota for the AL Central lead despite losing for the fifth time in six games. Chicago will try to avoid a three-game sweep Wednesday.

Fausto Carmona (8-5) pitched 5 2-3 innings to win his third straight start and Asdrubal Cabrera broke out of a 1-for-19 slump with three hits for the Indians, winners of 12 of 15.

Pirates 3, Reds 2

CINCINNATI – Rookies Brandon Moss and Andy LaRoche hit back-to-back home runs to help the Pittburgh Pirates snap a 10-game losing streak with a 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night.

Moss and LaRoche were both acquired in a three-way trade on July 31 that sent left fielder Manny Ramirez from the Red Sox to the Dodgers and left fielder Jason Bay from the Pirates to Boston.

Moss, sent to the Pirates from the Red Sox, had a career-high three hits.

Phillies 4, Nationals 0

WASHINGTON – Cole Hamels pitched into the eighth inning, Jimmy Rollins drove in two runs and the Philadelphia Phillies snapped Washington’s seven-game winning streak with a 4-0 victory Tuesday night.

Hamels (12-8) gave up five hits in 7 1-3 innings, striking out six and walking three. In 29 starts this season, he has pitched at least seven innings 23 times – the most in the majors.

Rollins had two RBI singles and a walk for the Phillies, who began the day two games behind the first-place New York Mets in NL East.

J.C. Romero, Chad Durbin and Brad Lidge finished the six-hitter. The Nationals have been shut out 20 times, seven more than any other major league team.

Yankees 7, Rays 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Mike Mussina earned his 17th win, and the New York Yankees got home runs from Alex Rodriguez and Xavier Nady in a 7-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night.

Joba Chamberlain came off the disabled list for New York and pitched 1 1-3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Tampa Bay’s lead in the AL East was trimmed to four games over Boston, which beat Baltimore 14-2.

Braves 16, Marlins 14

MIAMI – Pinch-hitter Ruben Gotay had an RBI double in the ninth inning and the Atlanta Braves spoiled a seven-run Marlins rally to beat Florida 16-14 on Tuesday night.

Kelly Johnson had four hits and four RBIs, and Omar Infante had four hits and two RBIs for the Braves, who had a season-high in runs. Atlanta, which snapped a four-game losing streak, scored 14 runs against the Reds on May 4.

Alfredo Amezega had a career-high five RBIs for the Marlins, who have not won consecutive games since July 30-31. It would have been by far the biggest comeback win this season for Florida, which had rallied from three-run deficits five times this season.
