PARIS – An Oxford man pleaded guilty Tuesday in Oxford County Superior Court in connection with a break-in at a Paris woman’s apartment March 25.
Kyle Edwards Hunt, 28, of 23 East Oxford Road, pleaded guilty to burglary, violation of a protection from abuse order and violation of conditions of release.
In exchange for the guilty pleas, charges of gross sexual assault, criminal mischief, criminal threatening and domestic assault from a March 11 incident involving the same 28-year-old woman were dismissed.
Justice Roland Cole requested that sentencing be continued until Thursday.
“I guess I’d feel more comfortable knowing what the victim’s position is regarding this,” Cole said.
Hunt was arrested March 11 on initial charges of domestic terrorizing, domestic assault and domestic stalking.
Assistant District Attorney Joseph O’Connor said Hunt broke into the woman’s apartment in Paris on March 25 with a .357-caliber Magnum Taurus handgun. He said it was disputed whether Hunt sexually assaulted the woman.
After the incident, Hunt refused to leave, prompting a three-and-a-half-hour standoff with police. Hunt fired at least three shots inside the residence, police said, but no one was injured. He eventually surrendered.
Hunt has been free on $50,000 surety bail since April 24.
O’Connor said the plea agreement calls for Hunt to serve six months of a five-and-a-half-year sentence and three years of probation on the burglary charge. Hunt would also serve six months concurrently on the violation of protection from abuse charge and pay a $200 fine on the violation of bail conditions charge.
Hunt would be required to refrain from using drugs or alcohol, attend substance abuse counseling and undergo a psychological evaluation, and have no contact with the woman. Cole recommended that Hunt not be allowed to possess dangerous weapons.
O’Connor said Hunt has no criminal history and has abided by his bail conditions since his release. However, he said the woman was “not enthused” with the proposed plea.
“I live in fear every single day,” the woman said when contacted by phone Tuesday. “I feel like he’s getting off very scot-free, and it’s not the end.”
