I just read the article about the “resolution” of JoAn Karkos’ theft of a Lewiston Public Library book, and I’m trying to calm down enough to be sensible.
First, she didn’t return the book. Second, she hasn’t decided whether to pay the fine. She says she called their bluff. She is right about that.
By backing down, officials are setting a precedent that can be cited by any person for stealing books from any library. City and court officials haven’t really “resolved” the issue, because she might not pay the $100 fine. Are they going to back down on that, and hope nobody notices?
I hope individuals and groups, including public libraries, protest loudly enough to force the city to obey its own laws. Neither theft nor censorship should be allowed to go unpunished.
