PITTSFIELD (AP) – Two juveniles who were skipping school face arson charges for allegedly discarding a lit cigarette that caused a fire at an abandoned house in Pittsfield.

Police say the 14-year-olds, both freshmen at Maine Central Institute, have been released into the custody of their parents.

The abandoned home, which was up for sale, was engulfed by flames when firefighters arrived at the scene Friday.

Police say witnesses described two teenagers running from the building and they were found a short time later. Chief Stephen Emery said the two admitted to police that they were responsible for the blaze.
