MILLINOCKET (AP) – A Peace Corps volunteer from Maine has exchanged marriage vows with his bride in the African nation of Cameroon – but only after his native town of Millinocket certified that he’s a monogamist.
Town Council Chairman Wallace Paul sent a letter verifying that 29-year-old Ben Clark had never been married, especially not to several people, and was of good character.
Polygamy is legal in Cameroon, where the nation’s law requires grooms to declare their preference and back it up with proof from their place of birth.
The groom’s father, Quentin Clark, says he looks forward to meeting his new daughter-in-law, a seamstress who also works as a translator for their son, an agroforestry Extension agent with the Peace Corps.
