Masses marking the end of services at St. Joseph’s Catholic Mission in Dixfield and St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Mexico will take place next month.

Both are closing as part of the statewide restructuring of Catholic churches.

“The services will commemorate the years as worship sites,” the Rev. Angelo Levasseur said Thursday afternoon.

Levasseur, pastor of the Parish of the Holy Savior, said the Dixfield church’s Mass of thanksgiving, marking the end of services, will take place at 10 a.m. on Oct. 12. The Rev. James Martel, a retired priest, will officiate.

It will be the first time in nearly a year that the Weld Street church will hold a service. It was closed during winters the past few years. Because of the restructuring of the area’s parish, it did not reopen this summer.

Levasseur said many sanctuary items from St. Joseph’s will be used by Our Lady of the Snows in Bethel. The Bethel church, along with St. Athanasius and St. John Catholic Church in Rumford, which has been undergoing repairs and renovations, will remain as worship sites.

Levasseur will preside over the final Mass at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church at 8 a.m. Oct. 26.

St. Theresa’s was built in 1926, one year after the saint for whom it is named, St. Theresa of Lisieux, was canonized. She was also known as St. Theresa of the Child Jesus.

Levasseur said she was a member of a contemplative order in France. Her feast day is held during early October, but because the church is ending its services on Oct. 26, she will be a focus of the Mass.

Rita Girardin, a longtime member of St. Joseph’s Mission, said the committee charged with planning the final service is looking for people who were the first and last to be baptized, and the first and last to be married in each church. St. Joseph’s Mission was established in 1957.

Community breakfasts will follow the last Mass at each church.
