LISBON FALLS – Dirigo High School has a habit of saving its best girls’ soccer performances of the season for Lisbon.

“They always seem to have our number,” said Lisbon coach Jake Gentle. “We stay with them for 60 minutes of the game. Then they edge us out 1-0 or 2-0.”

Two goals from Megan Latour in a 12-minute span at the start of Thursday’s annual Mountain Valley Conference encounter got rid of that agonizing doughnut on Lisbon’s half of the scoreboard. In the process, Latour erased about five seasons’ worth of painful memories.

The Greyhounds added a breakaway goal from Tara Metzger in the second half and cruised to a 3-1 victory.

Dirigo won only two games in 2007. One of those was a convincing 3-0 triumph over Lisbon on its home turf in Dixfield. A year earlier, the teams played to a scoreless tie.

“The girls really wanted to get this one, especially the seniors,” Gentle said. “They thought this was their year to finally beat Dirigo.”

Latour landed the first haymaker at 5:30, flagging down a feed from Sierra Guay and punching a low shot through goalkeeper Lanette Bryant’s outstretched arms.

Just over six minutes later, Latour set up shop at the left post and punched home an offering from Brooke Lawrence.

“I was surprised by the second one,” Latour said. “That was Brooke’s goal. It was (going) in. I just helped it.”

Lisbon (2-0) played air-tight defense until Jazmine Brooks’ direct kick found a seam past goalie Samantha Purcell with 2:41 remaining.

“We missed our assignments on putting the wall up, and they made a great shot,” said Gentle. “That was a tough save for Sam because we didn’t have the post covered. All the credit to them.”

Bryant made 16 saves for the Cougars (1-1), who start eight seniors and have made dramatic strides from their 2-10-2 struggle a year ago.

Five different players found the net in a season-opening win over Boothbay.

“I don’t think there was any more skill on either side of the ball,” said Dirigo coach Art Chamberlin. “The effort’s there. We get by Georges Valley on Saturday, and then we’ve got a stretch of games where I think we can come away with a win.”
