PORTLAND (AP) – A national bicycling group is giving Maine high marks as a bicycle-friendly state.

In its first state-by-state ranking, the League of American Bicyclists rated Maine as the sixth-friendliest state for bicyclists. The list, released this month, is based on 70 factors in areas such as infrastructure, legislation and education.

Washington, Wisconsin and Arizona were rated as the top three states, with West Virginia, Georgia and Alabama taking up the rear.

The League of American Bicyclists is based in Washington, D.C., and has a membership of 40,000 individuals and 600 affiliated organizations.
