The New England Patriots have signed quarterback Matt Gutierrez from their practice squad and released wide receiver C.J. Jones.
Gutierrez, signed Saturday, is expected to be the third-string quarterback behind Matt Cassel and Kevin O’Connell against the New York Jets on Sunday.
Tom Brady sustained a season-ending knee injury midway through the first quarter against Kansas City last Sunday and Cassel took over.
Gutierrez spent all last season and all of training camp this year with the Patriots before being released on the final roster cutdown to the regular season limit of 53. They signed him to the practice squad Wednesday.
Jones was not activated for the game against the Chiefs. He spent last season on the practice squad.
