DERRY, N.H. (AP) – A Massachusetts man who ended up with two broken legs and two broken ankles for his birthday says he’d still get in another hot air balloon despite a harrowing first trip in New Hampshire.

Jessica Matchett arranged the balloon ride as a birthday present for her father, 63-year-old Ralph Avery of East Bridgewater, Mass. The first half hour after their liftoff from Salem on Friday was beautiful, but then the wind came up, forcing a hard landing in Sandown.

Despite the six hours of surgery he’s had and the six weeks he’ll miss of work, Avery says the experience won’t scare him from taking another ride once he recovers.
