THOMASTON – The first half-minute was a precursor of things to come.

When Georges Valley goaltender Alec Young made a quick save on a rebound off the post, it was the start of a busy day in the goalmouth. The Buccaneers keeper had his hands full Monday, while Lisbon kept the shots coming in a 3-1 victory.

Marcus Bubar scored all three goals for unbeaten Lisbon (5-0) while the Greyhounds were stellar defensively in handing Georges Valley (3-1) its first loss of the year.

“It’s definitely exciting,” said Bubar, a junior forward. “It’s the first time ever for our team and our coach. Last year, we came down here and lost a heartbreaker, 2-1.”

The Buccaneers had not lost a regular-season home game since September 2004. After wins over Georges Valley in the regular season and MVC title game last fall, the Greyhounds now boast three straight over the perennial power.

“To come here and win here is great,” said first-year coach Dan Sylvester. “I can remember all the years of coaching JVs and coming here and never beating them. Last year, we beat them a couple of times and then to come up here is great.”

Lisbon outshot Georges Valley 27-4. The Bucs lone goal came late in the game and was one of the best scoring bids the club mustered all game.

“Our game plan was to keep them from getting in their passing game,” senior defender Kyle Huston said. “They’re pretty good once they get their game going. So we tried to not let them start passing and keep possession of the ball.”

Lisbon’s bid on a George Clement shot in the opening seconds was a sign of things to come. Though Young was outstanding in goal, the Greyhounds attacked in waves, transitioning the ball nicely from the defense and midfield.

“That’s something we’ve been looking to do,” Sylvester said. “We haven’t had the opportunity to do that the last couple games. Against this team, if you don’t transition the ball from the back and distribute, we’re going to have difficulties.”

Instead, it was the Bucs that struggled against Lisbon’s speed and skill. Lisbon outshot the Bucs 14-2 in the first half and had a 1-0 lead after a Bubar goal with 10:49 left.

He took an Erik Metzger pass and beat two defenders for a shot that beat Young.

“I felt guys on each side of me,” said Bubar, who had two other chances in the first half to go with a pair of quality bids by Clement. “I just tried to get it passed them and get one step ahead of them and have a shot. It came off my foot and right to the corner.”

Bubar made it 2-0 at 9:38 of the second half. Morgan Reeves moved the ball ahead after a defensive mistake, and Bubar converted the pass that nixed a Bucs rally.

“It’s always good to get another goal,” Bubar said. “It’s a big momentum swing. We were playing down a little. That goal gave us a boost.”

Bubar finished off a Clement pass with 22:39 left for a 3-0 lead. Georges Valley got one back with 7:05 remaining when Logan Cross headed in a direct kick by Jonas Edward-Jenks.

“We were definitely looking forward to this because we felt Georges Valley was going to be one of our biggest competitors,” Huston said.
