A Rumford man faces six charges following a Monday evening tussle with police that resulted in him kicking an officer.

Timothy Gotto, 48, of 229 York St., Rumford, was charged with misdemeanor counts of terrorizing, disorderly conduct and criminal trespassing and two felony counts of assault. He was further charged with violating condition of release because he was on parole.

Sgt. David Bean of the Rumford Police Department said the incident started about 5:30 p.m. when police were called to the scene of a fight between Gotto and another man at a rooming house on Cumberland Street. Bean said the victim, an acquaintance of Gotto, lives at the rooming house. He had a large cut on his face from his fight with Gotto, according to Bean.

Law enforcement from Mexico and Oxford County initially responded to the call because officers from Rumford were handling another incident. Bean said officers determined that Gotto needed to be taken into custody when they arrived on scene a short time later. As Rumford police Officer Matthew Noyes escorted him to his cruiser, Gotto kicked him in the hand.

Bean said assault charges against Gotto, though normally misdemeanor charges, were elevated to felony charges because he is considered a repeat offender.
