LEWISTON – The best thing to happen in the first half for the Lewiston High School boys’ soccer team may have been getting scored upon Tuesday.

The Blue Devils fell behind but responded to beat Cony, 3-2, for their first win of the year. Alex Wong had a pair of goals while Abdullahi Musse had one.

“I thought it kind of woke us up,” said Lewiston coach Mike McGraw. “The last five minutes of the first half we played like we were capable of playing. It’s a struggle sometimes. We don’t play with confidence 100 percent of the time. We play in spurts, and we can’t play in spurts.”

After close battles with Mt. Ararat and Morse, it was a much-needed win for the Blue Devils, which hosts Edward Little on Saturday afternoon.

“It was good because we lost two games, and we tied one,” said Musse. “It was good for us to win this game.”

In a back-and-forth opening half, Cony (2-2) got the first goal when Jay Madison beat two defenders and rushed in alone for a chip shot with 11:58 left. Lewiston outshot Cony in the half but had nothing to show for it until Wong headed in a throw by Josh Pelletier with 1:53 left.

“We always have a defensive player go up on the goal,” said Wong. “One of our defensive players (Craig Sirois) was out. So coach said, ‘Go ahead and go get it.’ I went up, and I hit it. It felt good to get it.”

That lit the spark Lewiston needed. The Blue Devils played more consistent offensively and generated better scoring chances. The improved play produced a 3-1 lead in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Wong tipped in another Pelletier throw at 5:33.

“I was going to go far post,” said Wong. “It kind of went over everybody. I got my shin guards on it, and it went in.”

Then at 8:59, Musse’s hustle produced the game-winner. He deflected the ball away from a defender and chased it down for a shot from the left side.

“I was pressuring the ball, and it hit me in the knee, and I went after it,” said Musse.

Lewiston was in control of play for much of the half. With Cony missing Madison for 10 minutes after he and Cody Lessard drew yellow cards, the Rams couldn’t mount much offense. Madison returned and redirected a shot at the right post with 8:02 left in the game to get the Rams within one. The Rams tried to produce the equalizer but couldn’t get another prime opportunity. Madison had a try at the left post but Subeer Osman blocked it.

“Sometimes we play ugly and sometimes we play good,” said McGraw. “We have to find that level of consistency.”
