AUBURN – A man who was shot Monday during a confrontation with police was charged Tuesday with aggravated attempted murder.
Bartolo Ford, 47, of Lisbon was accused of ramming two police cruisers while leading officers on a chase in a stolen truck.
Auburn police are preparing a case against Ford in which he is expected to be charged with other crimes related to the burglary of a local company, theft of a truck and a chase with police.
Ford was treated Tuesday for a bullet wound to his leg and was listed in satisfactory condition at a Lewiston hospital during the day. Later in the evening, at the request of Ford, Central Maine Medical Center would not release updated information about his condition.
Police say Ford stole a dump truck filled with concrete tiles from Superior Concrete Co. on Minot Avenue about 9 p.m. Monday. Police said when they tried to stop the truck on Minot Avenue, Ford refused to pull over and instead sped away onto Hotel Road.
During the chase, Ford allegedly rammed the one-ton dump truck into a police cruiser driven by Cpl. Kris Bouchard, who fired at the stolen truck, striking Ford at least once in the upper leg.
Police said Ford also rammed a second cruiser from behind and tried to drive into a third. The chase continued to Route 122 and then north onto Route 26 before ending on Hines Road in Poland, where the truck slammed into two parked cars. Ford fled on foot, police said.
Police searched the woods for hours with the help of tracking dogs. By the time Ford gave himself up, bleeding from his wound, more than two dozen officers from five police agencies were involved in the capture. The search was coordinated by Auburn police Deputy Chief Jason Moen, who ordered a long section of Route 26 closed to traffic.
“Deputy Chief Moen did a hell of a job,” said Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Deputy Tom Slivinski. “Everybody was where they needed to be and they did what they needed to do.”
Police from Oxford and Androscoggin counties assisted in the search for Ford, as did Lewiston police and Maine State Police.
Locally, police in Auburn and Lewiston are familiar with Ford after years of investigating burglaries, theft and other incidents in which Ford was described as a victim. Police said Ford lived for years in Lewiston and Auburn but now lives in Lisbon. Public records show that he has a residence on Pinewoods Road.
Police on Tuesday would not say how many shots were fired or how many struck Ford. The Attorney General’s Office is investigating the shooting and is not expected to release findings for several weeks.
Bouchard has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
