In high school golf, depth is your friend.

A team can have a fantastic top end player or two, but when it comes to head-to-head matchups, having five guys who can score better than average will generally give your team a better shot at winning.

Take, for example, Winthrop. The Ramblers defeated Livermore Falls and Telstar Friday by a combined 13-1. The stunning figure from that match, though, is the Ramblers’ four-man stroke average, which is the seventh point in any dual match in the MVC.

Winthrop carded 159 strokes between its top four golfers, an average of better than 40 per player for nine holes.

To give you an idea of how good that is, Class A Gardiner, which features reigning Maine Amateur champion Ryan Guay, had a total of 180 strokes in its match against Leavitt in a win.

Lewiston, in a 7-1 win over Morse, had 179, still 20 more than Winthrop.

Stumbling block

The St. Dom’s golf team won’t have to worry about the pressure of trying to complete a perfect season anymore.

Fryeburg took care of that in resounding fashion this week, taking out the Saints 8-4 on Friday at Lake Kezar Country Club in Lovell. It’s the first regular-season loss in two seasons for the Saints.
