FAIRFIELD – The northbound lane of Interstate 95 was closed here Tuesday after a truck crashed on the bridge spanning the Kennebec River.

Troopers say a large truck hauling 18 tons of cattle feed overturned on the bridge about 12:30 p.m. The truck struck the guardrails and overturned on its side. The rear portion of the truck was hanging over the side of the bridge and some of its cargo spilled into the river. Heavy equipment was called to remove the truck.

The driver, 59-year-old Richard Laroche of Swanton, Vt., was slightly injured and treated at a Waterville hospital. He was able to crawl out of the wreckage.

The interstate closure was expected to last through the Tuesday evening commute, state police said. Northbound traffic was detoured at Exit 133 in Fairfield and motorists were advised to take Route 100 to Clinton to re-enter the Interstate at Mile 138.
