LEWISTON – A 71-year-old Lisbon Street woman was ordered Tuesday to serve six months in jail after admitting that she helped to supply drugs to a Winthrop woman who later died of an overdose.

Lucille Russell remained free Tuesday night, given a reprieve until Oct. 10 so she can have surgery on her foot. From her home, Russell said she was still haunted by the death of 47-year-old Lisa Nicholson, who died Jan. 21, 2007, as the result of taking Fentanyl and OxyContin.

“I’ve been just getting sick over it,” Russell said. “I just want it over.”

Earlier this year, Russell and Michelle Olds, 43, of Lewiston, were each indicted on a charge of aggravated furnishing Fentanyl. According to the indictment, the women are accused of providing the drug to Nicholson in Lewiston and Winthrop the night before she died.

Investigators called for toxicology tests after Nicholson was found unconscious in the basement of her parents’ home in Winthrop. The Medical Examiner’s Office later determined that Nicholson died of a mixture of OxyContin and Fentanyl. They said the Fentanyl alone was enough to cause the death.

Russell said Tuesday night that she had no idea that the drugs provided to Nicholson would result in her death. She barely knew the woman.

“I didn’t know they were going to use the stuff the wrong way,” Russell said. “I think I met her once or twice, tops.”

Instead, Russell blamed her association with Olds as the cause of the jail sentenced handed down Tuesday in Kennebec County Superior Court.

“I just got involved with a very bad person,” Russell said. “I’ve never had any problems. All of a sudden, I’m going to jail before she is.”

The case against Olds has not been resolved in court. In August, she was arrested in downtown Lewiston and charged with possessing a scheduled drug and violating conditions of release. She has since been bailed on those charges.

Russell said she has not talked with Olds since they were charged. In fact, she applied for a restraining order to keep her away.

After an operation to correct a foot problem, Russell will report to the Kennebec County Jail in August Oct. 10 to begin serving a half-year sentence.

“I’ve never had any problems like this,” Russell said. “All they found on me was two speeding tickets and a car accident.”

Olds has a criminal history of burglaries and thefts.

Russell said she met Olds through her hairdresser but did not elaborate on how the pair came to allegedly give drugs to a woman that later died.

“It’s a messy story,” Russell said.

Efforts to locate Olds were unsuccessful Tuesday night.
