BANGOR (AP) – A Mexican who took a wrong turn in Pennsylvania and ended up at the Canadian border at Houlton is going to prison for possession of counterfeit greenbacks.

Silvestre Rivera Hernandez was arrested last February along with his son and two nephews. The other three already have served jail sentences and have been deported to Mexico.

Law enforcement authorities say Hernandez dumped the counterfeit $100 bills in a trash barrel in the men’s restroom at the Houlton border crossing after being turned back from Canada.

Hernandez, who faced up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000, was sentenced this week to a year and a day in prison. He’s expected to be deported after completing the sentence.
