AUBURN – Officers and programs for the 2008-2009 year of the Woman’s Literary Union are announced: Florence Annear, president; Mary Ann Norcross, vice president; recording secretary, shared responsibility; corresponding secretary, Phyllis Splain; Marilyn Wilkinson, treasurer; Amey Feeley, assistant treasurer.

Also, Barbara Randall, program chairwoman; Fern Desjardin, hospitality chairwoman; Tonie Ramsey, clubhouse chairwoman; Genice Bugel, membership chairwoman; Cathy Westleigh, publicity; Marguerite Powers, scholarship chairwoman; Janet Eustis, After Dark president; Melanie Ness, Garden Club president.

The Woman’s Literary Union main club meets at 2 p.m. the second Thursday of each month, excluding December and January, with the following programs scheduled: Oct. 9, “Book Ends,” presented by Barbara Randall, Mary Ann Norcross and Amey Feeley.

Also, Nov. 13, Jo Diggs, “A Life in Fabric”; Feb. 12, Phil House at the piano with a selection of love songs; March 12, William Hubbell, author of “Good Fences”; April 9, annual luncheon at noon; and May 14, Lynn McKenzie, “100 Hats, 1860-1960,” annual meeting.

Refreshments are served and guests are welcome at the monthly meetings.

The After Dark Club meets at 7 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month with the following programs: Oct. 21, “Quilt Designs,” Sally Rowe; Nov. 18, “Raising Alpacas and Utilizing Alpaca Fiber,” Morelia Candia of Andes Alpaca Farm; Jan. 20, “Realism Painting,” Ray Jacqmin; Feb. 17, book discussion of Cokie Roberts’ book, “Founding Mothers: The Women Who Raised our Nation.”

Also, March 17, harp music for healing, Melanie Lee; April 21, “Interview with a Survivor of the RMS Titanic,” Karen Lemke; May 19, Robyn Holman, director of the Atrium Gallery, “Alice Spencer: Textiles/Translations-Exhibition” of textiles from China, Mongolia, Bhutan, Turkey, Guatemala and other countries, at the L/A Atrium Gallery.

The Garden Club meets at 2 p.m. the third Thursday of the month with the following programs planned: Oct. 16, “Management of the Environment,” Jon Labonte, executive director, Androscoggin Land Trust; Nov. 20, native wildflower slide show, master gardener Mariane Henried-Perry.

Also, Feb. 19, Plantasia’s Floral Design, creating a floral design; March 19, Doug Beck, birds and their habitat; April 16, Kirsten Ness, water resources specialist, Portland Water District, “Rain Gardens”; May and June, to be announced.

The union holds three special events each year. The Winterberry Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8., featuring baked goods, gift items, a jewelry table, knit and stitch table, plants and greens and raffles. A cafe will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Christmas holiday open house will be Dec. 5, 6 and 7, with two floors of the house decorated for the season. The Mother, Daughter, Doll Tea will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 25.
