WALES – Mr. Versatility, thy name is Jasper Cousins.

It was on Saturday, anyway.

Cousins scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter – one each on a rush, a reception and an interception return – as MDI rallied from a five-point deficit in the final frame to post a 38-24 win over Oak Hill, spoiling the Raiders’ homecoming.

“This was a big test for us,” MDI coach Mark Shields said. “We knew coming down here was going to be a dogfight. We’re really proud of what we did today, we came out injury-free, and it was a big win for our program.”

Cousins finished with nine rushes for 37 yards and two touchdowns, five receptions for 71 yards and a touchdown, one interception return for 48 yards and a touchdown, and one punt return for 23 yards.

“It’s different every game, sometimes it’s defense, sometimes it’s offense,” Cousins said. “I guess today it was both.”

Cousins’ biggest play came late in the fourth quarter, with his team ahead by seven.

The Raiders had just forced MDI to punt for the first time all afternoon, and got the ball back with 2:57 to play. On the Raiders’ first play from scrimmage, quarterback Brett Turcotte lobbed a pass into the flat that Cousins got to first, and the speedy DB raced 48 yards the other way to put the game out of reach.

“He had some big plays today,” Shields said, “but none bigger than that interception.”

“(Shields) told me before I got the interception, in the huddle during the timeout, not to run the ball back if I got the pick, or at least be smart about it because we don’t want to fumble it,” Cousins admitted. “But I saw it coming, and it just seemed open, so I took it all the way.”

And Cousins didn’t even have the most all-purpose yards (159) for the Trojans (4-1). That mantle belongs to Terrence Jones, who racked up 114 yards and a touchdown receiving and 79 yards rushing.

“It wasn’t all just me,” Cousins said. “The whole team played well, too, but I guess it was just my day.”

Oak Hill, meanwhile, fell on more hard luck and untimely turnovers. The Raiders began the third quarter trailing 19-8, but opened the half with a clock-chewing, 11 play, 72-yard drive to cut the lead to 19-16. On the ensuing MDI possession, Adam Hathorne (19 carries, 102 yards) came up with a clutch defensive play, intercepting MDI quarterback Tyler Crawford. That set up another Oak Hill score and two-point conversion, and Oak Hill seized the momentum.

“Things were going great, but it’s amazing how they dissipate just like that,” Oak Hill coach Bruce Nicholas said.

The Trojans marched back down the field, and Cousins hauled in a quick out from Crawford from two yards out to put MDI back in front by one.

“We had them third-and-16, and he rolled this way and threw the ball all the way back across the field, and he completes it,” Nicholas said. “We almost tackled the quarterback, and if he juggles it a bit more, who knows. A couple playa here and there, and things can sway, but things aren’t swaying our way right now.”

On the ensuing kickoff, Hathorne coughed up the ball as he was tackled on the runback.

“I thought it was a fumble, to tell you the truth,” Nicholas said. “And when things start to go bad for us this year, they snowball. He was having a great day, and I feel bad for him. But that wasn’t what lost us the game. It certainly didn’t help, though.”

Six plays later, Cousins scored again, but MDI missed a two-point conversion, keeping the Raiders within one touchdown.
