BUCKSPORT, Maine (AP) – Solar power groups say there are an estimated 3,000 solar users in Maine, ranging from elaborate homes to small cottages.

But a number of businesses are also looking with increasing interest at getting power from the sun’s rays.

This weekend, 71 homes and businesses opened to the public so people could get a look at the different kinds of solar systems being used. The annual event is sponsored by the Maine Solar Energy Association and the American Solar Energy Society.

The Maine solar association’s Richard Komp says that of the estimated 3,0900 solar users in Maine, more than half are on the grid.
