LISBON – It was something they hadn’t seen all season.
Typically, the Lisbon boys’ soccer team has scored early and ridden that momentum to a victory.
Tuesday, the Greyhounds thought they were following that routine until Georges Valley tied the game.
“We don’t like people scoring on us,” said Lisbon junior forward Marcus Bubar. “But it’s always good to have somebody score on us because it gives us a challenge.”
Lisbon rose to that occasion and broke the lead back open in a 3-1 win. Bubar had all three goals for the Greyhounds, which beat the Bucs by the same score earlier in the year in Thomaston.
Bubar now has 20 goals this season, including six in two games against Georges Valley.
“We reacted well to it,” said Bubar. “We came out and got another one after that and kept going from there.”
Lisbon (10-1) was ranked second in Western B in the latest Heal Point standings while Georges Valley (7-3-1) were second in Western C.
Lisbon dominated the first match between the two, outshooting the Bucs 27-4 and ending a home winning streak that dated back to 2004.
Though Bubar put the Greyhounds ahead at 7:02 when he converted a Kyle Huston pass on a breakaway, the Bucs rallied. With 25:56 left in the half, a Chris Wilgus throw from the right sideline was deflected in. The goal was awarded to Jonas Edwards-Jenks.
“It’s the first time we’ve seen that,” said Lisbon coach Dan Sylvester, who said his team wasn’t communicating well in the first half and moving the ball effectively as it did in the previous win. “We haven’t seen that situation, 1-1 with a team this year. It’s good for those things to happen sometimes. I thought the guys did well to hold their composure.”
Georges Valley played even for a few minutes and produced a little bit of pressure on the offensive end. The Bucs couldn’t generate much in the way of quality threats to beat keeper Derrick Lycette. Georges Valley goalie Alec Young had another solid outing and kept the game tied late in the half when he stopped a point-blank shot by Bubar, set up by a George Clement pass.
Less than a minute later, though, Bubar didn’t miss. Dan Conlon set him up with a pass from the midfield. He beat a pair of defenders for the shot with 4:18 left in the half.
“Dan made a nice clear from the backline,” said Bubar. “It was just me and the goalie. I beat the goalie to the ball and had a shot.”
In the second half, Lisbon controlled most of the play. Clement and Phil Carville had scoring bids. A throw by Cam Bubar was deflected in front but hit Young, who hadn’t see it coming.
Lisbon made it 3-1 with 15:43 left when Bubar battled through a pair of defenders and got a shot off from the left side.
“We got back to our short game and communication,” said Sylvester. “It kind of lessens the amount of running around getting tired. It kept fresh legs out there for a long time. That makes a difference.”
