Turner has lowered its property tax rate from $13.65 per $1,000 valuation to $13.43 per $1,000. The drop will save a homeowner with a $100,000 home $22 a year.

Turner used $250,000 from its surplus account to make the cut.

“It’s important to lower taxes whenever you can, but some of the conversations were taking place about increased energy costs and people being struck by that basic necessity more profoundly this year than last year,” Town Manager Eva Leavitt said. “(Selectmen) were very conscious of household issues.”

The town’s surplus account still stands at about $1.5 million.

Turner’s budget is almost $7.2 million, with $4.2 million going to schools, $2.6 million going to the town and $430,000 to Androscoggin County.

The tax rate was adopted in August. Tax bills were sent out in September and are due Nov. 1.
