Last week, the Lewiston School Committee took a tour of Farwell school’s prekindergarten classrooms. In the classes were a few 4-year-olds demonstrating what they do in school: build with blocks, paint, play, listen to stories.

“Where’s the sandbox?” asked Lewiston School Superintendent Leon Levesque. “That was my favorite spot.” Staff showed Levesque the sandbox as he stood there grinning.

Literacy specialist Pat Kordalski, who heads up Lewiston’s preschool programs, said if ever she’s having a bad day, she’ll stop by one of the classrooms. Surrounded by 4-year-olds you can’t help but smile, she said. “They’re so happy. It’s a great place to be.”

Selling marijuana by the road

According to Maine Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland, more than 125 people were cited with drug offenses during the recent Harvest Fest in Starks.

One arrest happened after a man was found selling marijuana from a card table set up on the road leading to the festival. Troopers Randy Keaten and Josh Birmingham got a tip, and hiked through nearby woods to surprise the roadside vendor, McCausland said. Seized was a pound of pot and $1,290.

A total of 10 pounds of marijuana, 500 Ecstasy pills and an assortment of prescription medication, cocaine and LSD were gathered by state police in the arrests.
